What is the bare minimum equipment needed to start blacksmithing?
You need three core tools: a heat source (small propane coffee-can forge or brake-drum coal forge), an anvil or heavy piece of steel railroad track, and a 2 lb cross-peen hammer with safety eye protection.
What is the difference between Damascus steel and pattern-welded steel?
Historical Damascus was made from Indian Wootz crucible ingots containing high carbon and trace vanadium carbide bands. Modern Damascus is technically pattern-welded steel: alternating layers of 1095 and 15N20 high-nickel steel forged and folded together.
Why does my steel crack during quenching?
Thermal shock or uneven pre-heating. Water quenching high-carbon steels (like 1095 or O1) often causes micro-fractures; using pre-warmed medium-speed engineered quench oil (130°F) substantially reduces cracking risk.
